What is Sambo?

Sambo is a dynamic martial art and combat sport that originated in the Soviet Union in the early 20th century. The name "Sambo" is derived from the Russian phrase “SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya”, meaning “self-defense without weapons.” It combines techniques from judo, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and traditional folk styles, making it a highly effective system for sport and self-defense.

Sambo focuses on throws, takedowns, ground control, and submission holds. Over the years, it has evolved into two main disciplines: Sport Sambo, which emphasizes throws and grappling, and Combat Sambo, which includes striking techniques and is used in military and law enforcement training.
